SABER West Conference 2026

This year, members of our research group had the opportunity to attend and present their work at SABER West, an annual STEM education research conference. Here, they shared their ongoing research projects, connected with fellow researchers, and gained experience as professional presenters. 

Research Spotlight

Amarachi and Morgan presented research examining how pursuing a non-STEM minor can shape STEM students' sense of identity and perceptions of their STEM environment. Their work explored how interdisciplinary experiences can influence students' academic journeys and sense of belonging.

Olivia presented research on Black undergraduate students' experiences with race and justice in science curriculum and pedagogy, while also examining how today's sociopolitical climate influences students' career aspirations within STEM.

Preparing for the Conference

Preparation looked a little different for everyone, but many hours of practice was a common theme. Amarachi refined her presentation through mock presentations with friends and practice timed sessions alongside her lab members. Morgan noted the collaborative effort behind her presentation, describing how her team worked together to polish slides, rehearse, and provide one another with feedback. Olivia prepared by writing a script that she rehearsed for days, with a little bit of retail therapy helping as well!

At the Conference

For everyone, the conference was a mix of excitement and nerves.

Amarachi shared that although presenting to fellow researchers was initially a bit intimidating, speaking to a live audience ended up being a really rewarding experience. For Morgan, attending her first SABER West conference exceeded her expectations. She was able to find inspiration in seeing students from different universities share their research, and she was also able to build connections in a welcoming environment. Although Olivia felt anxious throughout much of the conference, the support of her lab mates helped her grow more comfortable, allowing her to fully embrace the opportunities to learn from others and make meaningful connections.

Together, their experiences highlight what makes experiences like SABER West so valuable. Not only did they have the chance to share their research, but also the opportunity to grow as scholars, support one another, and become part of a broader community.
